Trending and clever costume ideas for Halloween 2024

We’ve made it to October — the spookiest month of the year. Those who go all out for Halloween likely have already decorated their houses and picked out their costumes – possibly even weeks ago. If you’re like me and get a later start on your Halloween looks, now’s the time to gather inspiration for this year’s big event. 

To see what’s trending for 2024, I headed to Google’s Explore page to uncover the costume ideas Canadians are searching for this Halloween. Below you’ll find a selection of costume ideas for families, couples, individuals or groups. 

While they’re all available to purchase, don’t forget that with a little creativity and some DIY costume magic, there’s a good chance you could pull these off with items you have laying around the house too.

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit theaters last month, bringing a resurgence in popularity to the classic Halloween costume. There’s no shortage of costumes out there to channel your inner ghoul – just don’t forget the Beetlejuice wig. 

Although she didn’t set out to turn into a meme, Australian Olympic breakdancer Rachael Gunn (A.K.A. Raygun) took the internet by storm this summer. Expect to see at least a few of these costumes around this Halloween – dance moves not required.

To pull off this costume, a Kansas City Chiefs jersey and a glittering bodysuit easily makes for a cute couples look. There are also plenty of other outfits to choose from, as Swift and Kelce have made many high-profile appearances together in the last year to inspire your Halloween look. 

Another dynamic duo that’s sure to be a hit this Halloween? Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine is the perfect costume for friends who aren’t afraid to let loose. 

If your toddler is obsessed with Bluey, what better way to celebrate Halloween than with a matching family costume that pays homage to the adorable kids’ show? Parents can dress up as Bandit and Chilli, while kids can dress up as Bluey and her sibling Bingo. 

If you have a group that’s willing to dress up together, Care Bears could be the way to go. Everyone can choose a character based on their personality or favourite colour, and it works just as well with two people as it does with ten. 

With the release of Joker: Folie à Deux on Oct. 4, the movie is just in time for this year’s Halloween festivities. Dress up as the Joker or Harley Quinn on your own, or grab a friend to complete the duo.
