Description

First, this is not some garbage reproduction made in India or China in the last 40 years, or in England or the USA at anytime during the 20th century. This is the real deal from Poland.
21.5 inches high, 15.5 inches wide, weighs 11 pounds, 8 ounces. Dates to the 19th century. All the threading is the old European way, all pieces come apart and fit beautifully together. Except! There is a complete replacement repair to the threading of the screw that connects the eagle finial to the fixture. It's a very old repair, the threading is made of steel (as opposed to all the original brass threading for the other parts). Because this steel threading is a replacement, it does not screw in properly.
The base has faces and figure of a bearded old man, a baby or cherub (?), and classic face. This is part of the Renaissance Revival movement in the decorative arts in Europe. The black and white photos showing an identical example are from the book "A Collector's Guide to Judaica" by the former head of this department at Sotheby's, Jay Weinstein.
I was able to locate one other piece that has most of this mask pattern on the base (old man, baby), from a Sotheby's auction in 2013 as seen in the last photo.
