32 pages Mostly B&W, some color photographs 1995-2005
Earliest predecessor of the Chicago & North Western Transportation Company was the Galena & Chicago Union which commenced operations in late October 1848 on an eight-mile stretch between Chicago and Oak Park, Illinois. The C&NW name began as part of a route from Chicago to Janesville, Wisconsin and beyond in the late 1850s. The G&CU was acquired by the enlarging C&NW in 1864. Building westward across Iowa, the C&NW would become part of a so-called Overland Route after the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific completed the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.
The C&NW's long identity as a separate railroad came to an end in late April 1995 when the rail system was merged into the Union Pacific. Since 1995, repaintings, renumberings and retirements have slowly removed the Chicago & North Western image. But, in this modest volume, the C&NW still lives during the 1995-2005 years.
