Last NEW Book.
Long out of print, we have this book brand new and still in shrink-wrap.
On April 1, 1976, the
Central Railroad of New Jersey
disappeared into the Conrail system, a system made of financially ailing Northeastern railroads.
But this book is not a look at why the railroad disappeared, but rather a look at the diverse
diesel motive power that made the Jersey Central unique
.
The year was 1924 and during that year, General Electric and Ingersoll-Rand placed an "oil-electric" locomotive in a demonstration tour of selected railroads. The CNJ, being one of these roads, hosted this locomotive for a 35-hour tour which included a run to Harrisburg in conjunction with the Reading.
While the test was a short one, the Central was obviously impressed and soon placed an order for a stock unit then being built. This unit, #1000, took up residence at the
CNJ Bronx, New York Freight Terminal
and remained there in service until 1952.
It wasn't until 1938 that the next diesel was placed in CNJ ownership, again a switcher type, to serve the
sprawling terminal areas of Jersey City, Bayonne, and Elizabethport
.
By the late 1940s, diesel development had grown to a point where the CNJ invested in road passenger and freight units. The die cast and over the next 10 years the CNJ became fully dieselized.
The purchase in 1965 of new high horsepower six-axle units brought the era of second generation technology to CNJ rails.
Due to financial instability in the late 1960s and in the 1970s, any new acquisitions were made with the help of
B&O, C&O, N&W
.
This book will examine each type of locomotive in detail and provide the reader an in depth look at the type of service it performed, the paint schemes it wore, and complete technical and disposition data.
